Renaming Newsgroup Folders

We should be able to specify friendly names for our newsgroup subscriptions, otherwise there is a LOT of redundant clutter like "microsoft.public" (at least) over and over

This has been asked for (many times) and refused (also, many times). So it will not come in this release.

Yeah, but can you do what Adahn wants to do?

Afraid not. It comes down to "user privacy and security" apparently from what an MSFT employee has just told me (they're on my Messenger contact list, not half as fancy as it sounds!) and it's there to enable the user to fully know where they're posting to.
I totally see your point, and even he agree's with me ;o)

And how do we know where that point has been is more of a concern :-)

That's the server account name not the newsgroup name.

Plz bring this up in the closed Outlook Express NG and let's find out this to be true or not...
Have a nice day!

It would make indeed much more sense including at least the previous message. I wonder why the R2-mentor doesn't. There must be a reason for explicitely turning this option off in Outlook Express.

would be a lot of extra programming work to keep track of the different news group names for both incoming messages and outgoing posted messages. probably more work that is worth the effort at ms.
they seem to be having enough trouble just keeping track of which groups on the server you are subscribed to for SYNC and COMPACT.

Shouldn't be a big problem. Look @ competitive products like Thunderbird (?) etc. If they can (for a long time) , I don't see why MS cannot do this.

OK I apologise - normally I don't like having the previous message because I'm quite particular to newsgrouping and just don't like sending any more than is absolutely necessary. Anyway, I've finally taken everyone's advice (and groans!) and put the message I'm replying to at the bottom of every message.
Hope this suits everyone OK :o)

hmmm I'd disagree with MS view on this. Sure, being able to look at the full address should 100% confirm exactly where you're posting. But Office Outlook 2003 allowed you to specify a display name of your choice (even though it includes the full e-mail address after the default name).
So if Outlook Express and Office Outlook take different standpoints on this matter, I'd either say Outlook Express did't catch up, or Office Outlook has a security bug.
Just my opinion anyway...
Regards.
P.S. Does we really need to see the whole microsoft.public..... thing anyway? MSN Messenger allowed us to have display names in place of e-mail addresses, and we usually hover over the names to see exactly the e-mail address. WLM 8 makes it even better for us to change ridiculous display names to normal, discernable names.

Actually, there's no problem for you to exclude irrelevant stuff out of your posts and keeping them concise. Just do what you do.
What you might want to do is just a quote of reference at the top of your responses, which just reduces the need for cross-referencing.
For example (as a new post):
------
"OK I apologise - normally I don't like having the previous message because I'm quite particular to newsgrouping and just don't like sending any more than is absolutely necessary."
No you're right, that's means you just keep things concise.

That was my style 2 years ago, but now you see how lazy I am now ; )
